As Maldivian people continue to live off the land and stick to their traditional ways, the Maldives are home to some of the most skilled craftsmen in the world! Craftsmanship is a cultural heritage, passed from one generation to the next over centuries.
Take coconut palms for example: they are not only part of the beautiful landscape of the Maldivian islands, they are also a very useful material.
On Hideaway Beach, coconut trees, widely used in cuisine across the resort, are also used in traditional Maldivian crafts providing excellent souvenirs to bring home for family and friends. You can purchase some of these finely crafted items in our Kamana Boutique.
Aside from souvenirs, coconut palms are part of the building material of the dhonis, the traditional Maldivian boats. Throughout history these handcrafted boats have been used by the local fishermen and by Maldivians as their primary means of transportation. Today dhonis are also extensively used on resort islands for excursions purposes.
