Hideaway bottled water

Bottled water – pure and simple

We all know how important it is to stay hydrated whilst holidaying somewhere so gloriously hot and sunny as the Maldives. We also know about the harm that single-use plastics are doing to the world’s oceans and plastic water bottles play a big part in this global problem facing marine creatures such as turtles that are prolific on the reefs of this tropical island nation. At Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa this was a dilemma that had to be faced and the result is a water bottling plant supplying all the island’s needs without a plastic bottle in sight!

Hideaway guests are able to enjoy deliciously pure and simple water in refillable chic glass bottles and the process is carried out on the island, making it even more environmentally friendly. An average of 600 bottles a day are refilled for consumption – that’s a lot of plastic bottles not ending up in the ocean.

The water processing plant is kept scrupulously clean with strict hygiene practices adhered to. The bottles themselves are sterilized in a special machine between each use and, for peace of mind, samples are sent away to Male each month for testing. Water is available in 500 ml or 1 litre bottles with a choice of still or sparkling.

Hideaway is one of the few resorts in the Maldives leading the way in the fight against single use plastic water bottles, only a few other resorts are able to offer this environmentally sustainable solution to staying hydrated.

Balinese Massage

Indulge in a Lomi Massage at Hideaway Spa

From the friendly welcome smiles to the relaxing atmosphere of the treatment rooms, to the professional standard therapists, it’s clear to see that Hideaway Spa treatments are special in every way, enabling you to restore balance and harmony between your mind and body.

Thanks to an extensive spa menu, there is a high chance that you will return to Hideaway Spa many times during your stay with us. The one treatment you should block time for though is the Lomi massage, one of our signature treatments. It is the perfect remedy when you are feeling jet lagged after your journey to paradise. Similarly, this treatment is great for those days that you’ve overdone it under the hot Maldivian sun. It’s also great to simply unwind and relax.

The Lomi massage involves our therapists working gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes, allowing you to relax and give in to the nurturing touch. To help smooth and nourish the skin, an aromatic vitamin C balm, from our Natura Bissé products range, is used as moisturiser during the massage.

The Lomi massage is a 50-minute or an 80-minute indulgence that can be booked as a couple’s treatment, or individual pampering for all those who need to have some time on their own.

The Maldives is famous for its underwater realm, and this is the reason why diving and snorkelling are offered in every resort, Hideaway included!

At Meridis Dive Center, we offer more. If you dream of diving, but can’t be bothered carrying the breathing equipment, and if when snorkelling you feel you are not getting enough of the underwater wonders, then you should definitely try freediving!

Yuko and Kirsten, our 2 freediving instructors at Hideaway, are ready to teach you the techniques to maximise your time underwater.

If you opt for a PADI Freediving Intro, you will get a taste of freediving in confined water and learn the basics of freediving techniques. If the freediving intro has you convinced, you can carry on with one of the license courses, allowing you to improve your breath hold ability and posture underwater.

Wedding celebrations with family and friends at Hideaway

A traditional wedding at home, surrounded by family and friends, or a romantic escape to wed on picturesque beach in the Maldives – a difficult choice to make but it doesn’t have to be, not at Hideaway!

At Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa the happy couple can celebrate their love for one another amongst their nearest and dearest with a wedding to remember. The team of wedding planners on the island are experienced in organising weddings and renewal of vows services and celebrations for not only the couple themselves but for large groups of guests too.

On such a special day what could be lovelier than to celebrate together? Bring the bridesmaids – the little girls can enjoy a twirl in a beautiful dress while dreaming of being a princess for the day – and then frolick in the warm ocean afterwards. The best man can deliver the amusing speech he has been planning since the engagement – he should be careful not to drop the rings in the sand though. The mother of the bride can shop for a great outfit for a tropical wedding and the father can take the walk down the sandy aisle on the stunning beach with his precious daughter on his arm.

Weddings are always occasions to remember but a wedding at Hideaway with friends and family to share it with is dream come true for guests and the happy couple alike.

No need to jet off on honeymoon after the wedding either – it’s right on the doorstep!

Magical Manta encounter for scuba divers

Mantas and Maldives go together like scuba and diving and it’s always a magical experience to dive with these incredible creatures.

The day started off as many do at Hideaway – the sun shining brightly, crystal clear water, which means only one thing for divers: great visibility, and a buzz of activity at Meridis Dive Center as instructors Yuko and Kirsten prepared to leave on the morning 2-tank dive boat. Joining the morning adventure were divers Katy and husband Dietmar and Tanja with her husband Sasha.

Their first port of call was dive site Tropical Garden and even before they jumped in, the group saw dolphins at the surface – a good morning was bound to be in store! The dive itself was simply stunning, a myriad of fish awaited: a school of fusiliers darting about like fireworks, a big napoleon, a school of barracudas, hunting jackfish and even a baby shark.

The happy divers enjoyed a relaxing surface interval before their second dive, at Aquarium, and the Indian Ocean had something very special waiting for them below the surface… as soon as the divers jumped in and started to descend they glimpsed a manta ray! The dive got better and better as it progressed – the group headed to the cleaning station and were thrilled to see three more mantas and the grand finale was mantas gliding in from the blue water to congregate at the dive site – like a great big manta party.

These graceful giants of the ocean couldn’t have timed it better – it happened to be Katy’s birthday and although she is an experienced diver and has dived in the Maldives before, she hadn’t had the privilege of diving with mantas before. She was over the moon with her magical Maldives manta encounter gift.

Maldivian Crafts at Hideaway Beach Maldives

Maldivian crafts made of coconut palms

As Maldivian people continue to live off the land and stick to their traditional ways, the Maldives are home to some of the most skilled craftsmen in the world! Craftsmanship is a cultural heritage, passed from one generation to the next over centuries.

Take coconut palms for example: they are not only part of the beautiful landscape of the Maldivian islands, they are also a very useful material.

On Hideaway Beach, coconut trees, widely used in cuisine across the resort, are also used in traditional Maldivian crafts providing excellent souvenirs to bring home for family and friends. You can purchase some of these finely crafted items in our Kamana Boutique.

Aside from souvenirs, coconut palms are part of the building material of the dhonis, the traditional Maldivian boats. Throughout history these handcrafted boats have been used by the local fishermen and by Maldivians as their primary means of transportation. Today dhonis are also extensively used on resort islands for excursions purposes.
